How to write a check

Filling out a check for the first time may be confused some people, here we will learn how to write it safely and correctly.

Step 1: Date the check

This is supposed to be the date when this check is wrote. This step is important so the bank and/or person you are giving the check to knows when you wrote it.

Step 2: The amount

There are two fields on the check you MUST write the amount you are paying.

First: Write the amount numerically (for example $130.45) in the small box on the right. Be sure to write this clearly so the ATM and/or bank can accurately subtract this amount from your account. Don't forget to write the currency symbol if it is not there.

Second: On the line below “Pay to the order of,” write out the amount in words to match the numerical dollar amount you wrote in the box. For example, if you are paying $1,500, you will write “one thousand and five houndred dollars.”

Writing the amount in words is important for a bank to process a check as it confirms the correct payment total.

Step 3: Pay to who?

The field “Pay to the order of,” is where you write the name of the person or company you want to pay.

You can also just write the word “cash”. Anybody can cash or deposit, so be aware that this can be risky if the check gets lost or stolen.

Step 4: Sign the check

Sign your name in the signature field. Make sure you sign it with the same signature you used when you opened the account at that bank.
